Traditions of the New Year in China

“Let’s drive Nanny away together!”

Learn about the tradition of celebrating the New Year in China.

On February 14, in the Scientific Library of NSU, students of Heilongjiang University studying at NSU will hold a quiz evening dedicated to the oriental traditions of the New Year holiday.

The second new moon after the winter solstice occurred on January 29, 2025. This time is considered the beginning of the New Year according to the eastern calendar. The celebration usually lasts 15 days.

According to ancient myth, at the beginning of each year the Chinese "fight" with a monster named Nian (translated from Chinese as “Year”), which is believed to appear on the first day of the holiday.

To protect their homes from this monster, people decorate them in advance: they paste the outside with beautiful patterns of red paper, inscriptions and paintings with wishes of happiness, health and longevity, and also hang red lanterns.

Of course, a holiday is not complete without gifts! In the Celestial Empire, it is customary to give paired items that symbolize unity and family harmony.

We invite everyone!
