Novosibirsk State University Library
In 1959 Novosibirsk State University and its founder and partner, the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, created the NSU Library.
Novosibirsk State University is currently one of the leading universities in the country and a recognized leader in training highly qualified scientific personnel. NSU is a unique teaching and research center.
From its inception to today, the multifaceted activities of the Library are directly related to the University’s educational and research process integrating higher education and modern fundamental science.
The NSU Library’s primary development goals are targeted at assisting this process by organizing user access to the global information flow and the traditions of world and national cultures.
The Library’s staff priorities include providing access to the world’s scientific and educational resources, modernization of the information system and library services, expanding modern information services to the level of a research university, and creating a comfortable environment for NSU Scientific Library readers and its employees.
The Novosibirsk State University Library sees its mission as supporting the University’s training and scientific research by creating the necessary conditions for users to access scientific and educational resources and developing information and library services that meet all the requirements of a modern research university.
The NSU Library, by preserving and developing its best traditions and mastering the use of new information and library technologies, brings together all spheres of the Library’s activity through a common objective to promote education, science, and culture.

Since the Library’s creation, its main focus has been the promotion of NSU’s educational, scientific, research, and cultural-educational processes. This includes access to a comprehensive, operational library and information-bibliographic services providing readers with printed and digital resources.
From its inception, Novosibirsk State University represented the realization of an idea, the integration of education and fundamental science. Today, the main goals for the Library’s development are the effective provision of educational and scientific activities at the University, organizing readers' access to the global information flow and the traditions of world and national cultures. Over the years of its existence, it has become an essential part of the University’s information infrastructure. The development of modern technologies and wide distribution of databases and electronic publications helped us create a fundamentally new environment for information and library services for readers and to expand the Library’s cultural space. The NSU Scientific Library is one of the best university libraries in Novosibirsk.

The Library catalogue is universal, corresponding to NSU’s profile. The main Library objectives include preserving the catalogue as part of the University’s cultural and information heritage. As of January 1, 2020, the NSU Library catalogue includes 2,054,709 titles. Currently, it consists of a Services Department, Fiction Department, Information and Bibliographic Department, and a Book Storage Department for the main catalogue that is located in a specially equipped underground room. The most valuable part of the catalogue, approx. 6,000 volumes from the 18th and early 20th centuries, is in the NSU Library rare books collection
The Library catalogue is created to support the University’s educational program profile and the information needs of its readers. Catalogue acquisitions are made on the basis of requests from all NSU departments and institutes.
Since 1991, the Library has maintained a digital catalog, Today, this includes information on the available catalogue, new domestic and foreign documents, dissertations, work by full-time NSU faculty members, periodicals and on-going publications. The digital catalog operates in real time and is the main reference service for the entire Library stock.

In 1999, the NSU Library joined the Russian Library Association (RLA) and continues to be an active participant attending and giving reports at annual RLA conferences.
2002
In 2002, the NSU Library had the honor of being the first Novosibirsk university library to become an individual member of the new Non-Profit Partnership "Associated Regional Library Consortia" - ARLICON. Active and fruitful cooperation has taken place for many years. ARLICON, established in 2002, initially focused on coordinating the activities of libraries to improve service quality. Subsequently, the united library consortia started the modernization process of library resource management.
In the modern world, ARLICON is the largest interdepartmental, interregional library network in Russia providing a powerful aggregate of information resources, library and information services.
2007
In 2007, the NSU Library joined the National Information Library Center «LIBNET».
A key milestone today is a large-scale project with “Ruslan”, the automated library information system. This improves Library operations and maximizes convenience in serving readers. 2008
Since September 1, 2008, digital book distribution was available with subscriptions to educational and scientific literature. In 2009, a digital service system was launched in the reading rooms.
2018
In 2018, the NSU Scientific Library switched to the new «Ruslan-Neo» automated library information system.

The Library is a University cultural and educational center. The Fiction Department hosts lectures, creative meetings with Novosibirsk poets and artists, copyright presentations of books, concerts by young musicians, and small gatherings. Literary and musical evenings are among the Library’s most honored traditions. During the school year, readers are offered numerous books on review and thematic exhibitions devoted to various fields of science, education, and culture. Exhibition activities reveal the Library’s treasures to readers. In recent years, readers have requested the Library offer virtual exhibitions. The Library site presents a whole gallery that enriches the virtual cultural and educational space.

The Library structure consists of seven departments that support the development of the entire library including information and bibliographic services as well as cultural and educational activities.
The team includes 32 staff members. These are highly qualified specialists with higher educations, among them are many NSU graduates. They take part in city, regional, all-Russian and international scientific and practical conferences, seminars, and creative competitions.
NSU library publications in professional periodicals always attract the Library community’s attention.

For many years, the Library has been active in the Regional Methodological Association of Novosibirsk University Libraries participating in its events and initiating activities reflecting common interests.
The NSU Library has repeatedly won first place in professional competitions and organized events for other university libraries in Novosibirsk.
In the everyday life of the University, full of urgent problems and concerns, the NSU Library creates optimal conditions for readers, from a shared cultural life to an individual space, a single field of information and culture. An example of this is the modernization of the reading room that reopened after renovations in 2017. These transformations provided many opportunities to create a new environment for library and information services. From the announcement on the Library's website, “An updated reading room is waiting for its cherished readers! It will appear before you as a bright and elegant embodiment of modern library design! It is important today and in our future “virtual” times, that our reading room remain a place where people come not only for educational, scientific, informational, and cultural communication, but real life dialogue. The life of Russian university libraries is changing, their “physical” space is changing. Our reading room corresponds to new models for generating a dynamic educational and scientific environment. The new reading room boasts a complete update of the space with its "open spaces", soft colors, bright sofas, and fleet of computers. The illumination is radiant with new lamps and the Siberian sun behind new windows lighting the librarian’s smiles.

All Library activities support its main goals to provide open access to information and increase the effectiveness of its visitors work through modern technologies. Following the latest world university library trends, the NSU Library now combines the traditional qualities of the “good-old” reading library atmosphere with the comfort provided by creating a new sense of space
