"An oasis of culture" is how the Fiction Department has been referred to by many generations of University readers. Here you can get literature to take home or work in a small beautiful reading room with its special “artistic” atmosphere. You can look through popular magazines, get to know what is new in literature, and receive expert advice from a librarian.
Users can explore world classics and modern literature as well as the best series of Russian and foreign prose and poetry. The Department has a collection of domestic literary and art magazines dating back to the 60s and 70s of the 20th century.
The subsidiary catalog has more than 50 thousand volumes. Most of it is on shelves with free access, which is important for reading enthusiasts. An excellent collection of books on art is presented in seven sections and totals more than 5 thousand volumes. This collection includes albums that are examples of printed art, as well as a collection of miniature books.
Rare publications are issued only for use in the reading room. Traditional book exhibitions devoted to various fields of art immerse readers in an era, introduce them to the most interesting pages from world culture, and create a “living” picture of the world. Department staff design interesting advertising to attract the attention of readers. Thematic exhibitions and literature presentations are very popular with students and University professors. Currently, the Department hosts virtual exhibitions on the Library website
In 2000, the Fiction Department established a video library. The collection was made up of domestic art and educational films, film adaptations of world classics, recordings of theater performances, films dedicated to the poets of the Silver Age, the "Museums of the World" series, and other films. In subsequent years, the Department catalog was significantly expanded with domestic art and educational films on cassettes and CDs.
In 2010, the Fiction Department switched to the digital system for distribution. This provides new opportunities for expanding and improving Library and information services for readers.
The use of new technologies in the Department’s cultural- educational activities creates a cultural space for literary and musical evenings, creative meetings, lectures, book exhibitions, and openings.
