From Paris to Pamplona: an anniversary for Hemingway’s iconic novel

"Fiesta" —The first full-length novel by Ernest Hemingway was published in 1926, and this year marks its 100th anniversary. The book serves as a literary manifesto for the "Lost Generation" — a generation whose youth coincided with the First World War, in the aftermath of which people sought to fill their inner void with something vibrant and new.

*Ernest Miller Hemingway (21.07.1899 – 2.07.1961) – american writer, journalist, recipient of the Nobel Prize (1954), and author of numerous novels and short stories.

uring the First World War, he served as a volunteer ambulance driver for the American Red Cross on the Austro-Italian front, but soon sustained severe leg injuries – this influenced his worldview and creative work. It was after this that he wrote the novel "Farewell to Arms!".

Later, the writer traveled extensively, lived in Paris, visited Spain, and was a great fan of bullfighting. Hemingway incorporated his personal experience into his works. It was the same with "Fiesta" — he wrote it, drawing on his own real-life trips and the people he met. In 1925, Hemingway and his friends traveled from Paris to the fiesta in Pamplona, an experience that left a deep impression on him. Within just a month, the writer had drafted the opening chapters, drawing upon his own personal experiences from the trip — complex romantic dramas, jealousy, and underlying tension — while imbuing many of the characters with the traits and personalities of his friends.
