«In that amazing Country where I saw the light...»

Dear readers!

The holiday of July 8 is approaching – the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, and the department of fiction invites you to a festive exhibition. We have compiled for you a list of many favorite children's books and books to read with your family. Some of them have for many years yet aroused love for noble and funny heroes, knights and adventurers, carefree children and adults who have preserved the spark of childhood in themselves. Some have yet to become classics of family reading.

Read and judge, and meet again your "five and ten years" in the "Land of Fantasies and Amusement" – the most beautiful country of childhood ever.

Elizaveta Evgenievna Malinina, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Oriental Studies.

Ursula Le Guin "The Wizard of Earthsea"

This is a book that can be read at any age: with great interest, I read it myself and to the child, and he carefully followed the plot. Every age perceives a certain facet of the narrative. For a child, this is a fairy tale, magic, an exciting and beautiful plot. For an adult – the possibility of touching the mysteries of life and death, the depth of philosophy, Wisdom, reading between the lines…

By the way, later a family friend, documentary filmmaker Vladimir Klimov, gave us the sequel of the fantasy book written 20 years later!

Natalia Silantievna Tyurina, Associate Professor of the Department of KOF, teacher of English.

Anna Matveeva "Every hundred years"

Evgeny Vodolazkin "Brisbane"

Dear readers!

I would like to recommend you the book "Brisbane" by our Russian writer Evgeny Vodolazkin.

Every person, adult or child, has a dream. We believe that if you want something very much, this dream will definitely come true. The image of such a dream in this novel is the distant city of Brisbane, in which the main character has never been among his travels in life. Something unfulfilled in life that can become her new goal when the old one dies. And the author says that if a person has his own Brisbane, then it is necessary not to betray his dream.

The excellent literary language of this writer, interesting reflections on our time, dynamic narration — all this will attract you and will not let you tear yourself away from the book until the very end. And although the story does not have a happy ending, believe me – you will not regret the time you devote to this wonderful work.

Emilia Grigorievna Sinyavskaya, Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor.

Dina Rubina "Maniac Gurevich"

Alexander Zvyagintsev "Forever and Ever"

Evgeny Vodolazkin "Brisbane"

No matter where and how you spend your summer, do not forget about reading books – funny and not so much, serious and not.

Natalia Ivanovna Zorkina, Senior Lecturer of the Department of General Physics.

Ilya Ilf, Evgeny Petrov "Twelve chairs"

Taffy "Humorous stories"

The novel "Twelve Chairs" was literally a desk book in our family. We could reread it from any page.

Now I am enthusiastically reading Taffy's stories. An amazing woman, a wonderful writer.

Elena Borisovna Dochkina, Head of the Administrative Management Department.

Maria Parr "Tonya Grimmerdahl"

The book by the Norwegian writer Maria Parr "Tonya Grimmerdahl" won my heart! Fascinating story of Toni, the only girl from the mountain village of Grimmerdahl, cannot leave anyone indifferent. Every day of Tonya's life is full of bright, sometimes dramatic events that we are acutely experiencing together with her. This book is imbued with a bright tenderness for children and adults, for the harsh Norwegian nature and the everyday life of ordinary people. Love and the drama of the breakup, business and charity, selfishness and self–sacrifice – the eternal antagonists of humanity are organically woven into the story of a little girl Tony, her parents, friends, neighbors... And there are no right and guilty – there is only sincere and comprehensive Love that overcomes all adversity!

Alexander Volkov "The Wizard of Oz"

Vladislav Krapivin "Three from Carronade Square"

I have loved to read since childhood. When I was in the third grade, I was allowed to borrow books for secondary school in the library, because I swallowed thin books for "elementary". On some holiday, parents in the class presented V. Krapivin's book "Three from Carronade Square". After reading it, I began to look for other books by this author, but he was not published much at that time. After graduating from the 8th grade, my mother and I went to rest on the Black Sea. We lived in the private sector, and one day I found the Ural Pathfinder magazines in the master's bedside table. And in them – the stories of Krapivin! I was all turned into joy. For the time remaining before departure, I tried to read as much as possible, and when I arrived home, was already looking for "Ural Pathfinder" magazines instead of books in city libraries.

My daughters also adore Krapivin's books, because these books teach kindness, honesty and courage. Now the books of this wonderful author are in our home library.

Liana Moriarty "Apples never fall"

This is a psychological novel about a difficult family relationship between a married couple and four adult children. The plot of the book keeps you in suspense all the time, but everything ends well, and after reading it, a pleasant impression remains.

In general, Liana Moriarty's books are written in a great style and a good literary language, and are very popular.

Literature about literature! Books about books!

What could be more fascinating than the riddles that this wonderful world gives us?

Sergey Volkov "Riddles of Literature"

The book of the teacher of literature Sergey Volkov is called: "Riddles of Literature" ("Simple science for children"). How to read fairy tales? How do I hear a poem? How to understand Gogol's strange stories? On the pages of this small, but such a rich little book, you will find an interesting story about folk art, author's poems and prose works that are being held at school today. The author is addressed primarily to middle-aged schoolchildren studying literature: "A literary work can teach its reader a lot if he masters the art of understanding it."

During the conversation, readers are introduced to terminology: sometimes the heading "Google!" appears in the text for a special interpretation of terms and concepts. The heading "Bookshelf" refers to the works of famous scientists.

The author analyzes the nature of the absurd, which lies in the events and incidents of Gogol's world, explores its peculiar characterological palette. "The characters involved in the ridiculous events of Gogol's novels also bear the stamp of strangeness. Here, for example, is a portrait of a judge: “The judge's lips were directly under his nose, so that he could snuff his upper lip as much as he liked. It served him instead of a snuff-box..."

I really advise you to open this book together with your children, plunging into the fascinating secrets of literature!

Henry Russell "The basics of literature history: key works, themes, techniques, genres"

I was pleased to read in April the book "The Main Thing in the History of Literature" by Henry Russell, a teacher of the history of English literature at Oxford. He is the author of many books on the history of literature. It would seem, "What is he to Hecuba?" But this manual is able to be called an innovative introduction to the history of literature. Indeed, such a book is an invaluable companion, an assistant prompting what and how to read.

The publication is a kind of digest: in the main part, the reader will get acquainted with the best works of fiction of "big prose" created over the past 500 years. The book draws our attention to 67 works of brilliant writers who changed the world – from Alice in Wonderland to Crime and Punishment. The author explains exactly how literature has its magical effect on us.

So, the structure allows the reader to navigate through the main topics, genres and literary techniques and get acquainted with the history of the development of the novel. The book has four sections: "Genres", "Works", "Themes" and "Techniques". You can read it sequentially or in separate sections in any order.

The book, accessible and interesting to read, belongs to the few sources in Russian, "according to which you can get acquainted with the world literary process and its most significant fruits," notes Anna Mikhalskaya, scientific editor of the publication.

Peter Boxall, Professor of English, specialist in literary theory, says: "The basics of literature history" – what an appropriate and also paradoxical name."

I recommend it for home, family reading – for a joint journey into the amazing and tempting world of literature.
