SEARCH INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE NSU LIBRARY DIGITAL CATALOG

The NSU Library digital catalog contains various library catalog resources including printed (traditional) documents and digital resources. You can conduct a digital catalog search by entering a request into the search box. For example, resources on programming in the Java language, make a thematic request and search for resources related to the topic.

The results will be displayed on the digital catalog search page. The results form has three main sections: Section 1 = input field for the search request; Section 2 = input field for faceted search request refinement  (attributes for filtered results); Section 3 = output field with search results.

The digital catalog uses search technology with  gradual request refinement for every step of the search so you have information to evaluate the search results. To present search results, a faceted system is used, grouping the results together by several attributes (facets). This approach means you do not have to immediately enter a complex search request.  This avoids getting no results because you do not know the rules for writing a digital catalog document description or make a simple error. You can start by entering some of the attributes for the search, and then refine the request step- by-step, evaluating the results at each step.

To conduct a search in the digital catalog, the catalog uses an algorithm for sequential refinement of the request:

Step 1. Enter search terms in the search box.
Specify the terms for the search in the request form (Section 1). To the left of the terms is a set of attributes that will be searched. By default, the search is performed for all attributes (any attribute). Another search attribute can be selected from the drop-down menu: title, author, or 20 other attributes. It is possible to create a more complex request by combining different search conditions in a logical progression, using the “+” button to add another search condition, and choosing another item from the drop-down list. Additionally, you can specify the type of material by selecting one or more item in the "Materials" window of the request form, for example, monographs (books) and dissertations. After generating a request, click the "Search" button.

Step 2. Visually evaluate the search results (Section 3).
If the list is too long and difficult to evaluate, clarify the request. To do this, you refine your search by adding attributes in the search form (see the previous step), or filter the results based on facets (attributes) (Section 2). Facet values allow you to evaluate the contents of the list of results by type of document (different aspects are used), by author, keyword (subject), language, and year of publication. The selected facet values are shown above the facet names. To cancel a particular filter, click the “x” to the right of the facet name. Refine the search and filter the result until you are satisfied with the list of resources provided.

Step 3. After selecting the document you want from the search results, information about the resource is updated with a detailed description.
Where and in what form the resource can be obtained is provided. If the identified resource is digital, a description is displayed containing the type of access and Internet address.

For digital resources, clarify whether the resource belongs to the University’s DLS (NSU Digital Library). If it does, access to the resource will not be limited in time. If it is an external DLS, the term of the contract for access to the DLS must be clarified. If the identified resource is printed, information about the copies available in the library catalog and their Library distribution outlet (service department) is displayed:

If there is no “Location and Availability” table, then this is either an article, or a general descriptive part of a multi-volume item, or all copies of this publication are signed out.

A printed book can be taken out with a library card. For some service departments, a book reservation request can be sent directly from the site. For online ordering, enter your university account information: login (university email address up to @) and the password or barcode of your library card and the password you received earlier at the library, and then click the "Reserve" button. In your personal account, you can monitor the status of reserve orders in the "Orders" section. The “Issued documents” section provides a list of documents received in the library, indicating the date of issue and the due date for return.
